Crayon Shin-chan suit les pitreries et les aventures farfelues de Shinnosuke « Shin » Nohara, cinq ans, et de ses parents, voisins et amis. Il se déroule à Kasukabe, dans la préfecture de Saitama, au Japon. Bon nombre des blagues de la série découlent de l'utilisation parfois étrange, contre nature et inappropriée du langage par Shin-chan, ainsi que de son comportement inapproprié. Un gag typique implique que Shin-chan confonde ses parents en utilisant la mauvaise phrase pour l'occasion ; par exemple, dire « Bienvenue ! » au lieu de « Je suis de retour ! » quand il rentre à la maison.
